Network, Network, Network
If I were to ask you in a job interview, “How have you demonstrated the ability to network to improve business results?” Would you know how to answer? To get the job as a marketing rep you need to be well prepared answer this kind of question. Marketing reps are responsible primarily for growing a company’s customer accounts. Smart employers know that great marketing reps have a knack for networking. When you answer this question in your job interview you should support your answer bisecting the kinds of professional associations that you belong to. By researching the employer you will know who their target customers are and even if you do not belong to an association related to the target customer, you can at least demonstrate that you understand who they’re trying to sell to and that you intend to go after the customers that they need. So in addition to citing the kinds of associations that you belong to or plan to join you should also include in your interview answer recent events that you attended for the purpose of networking and marketing. This can be something as business like as the Chamber of Commerce, business associations, but it can also just be a community gathering in your local area.
Now this next tip is perhaps understood, but I think it’s important for me to mention this. Make sure you walk into your marketing rep interview looking professional well groomed and well-dressed. I know the saying goes, “you can’t judge a book by its cover” and furthermore, there are employment laws against discrimination based on appearance for the most part. However incubated needs to you, but employers can require a professional look as a part of the job. And when it comes to the marketing profession, because your position is a client facing job, it would be to your advantage if you would clean up your image. Again, I’m not saying this is a modeling competition, what I’m saying is make sure that you look smart and professional. So, even though you might be a hipster on weekends and evenings, shave that beard if you happen. Also for all you male readers out there, please put on a tie. For the ladies, if you have a business suit that would be fantastic, skirt, heels and a blouse making sure that all of this is peaceful which means not low-cut, not too short not to tight.
